1.1. Photo-electric sensors
(back to sensors index)▲
Photo-electric sensors, also known as photo eyes, emit a beam of light that is used to detect the presence or absence of items and equipment or changes in surface conditions.
When the emitted light is interrupted or reflected by the object, the change in light patterns is measured by a receiver and the target object or surface is recognized.
Photo-electric sensors are very common in industrial manufacturing fields such as material handling, packaging, food and beverage, medical, and many others.
There are three ways to select a photo-electric sensor from Banner Engineering:

Photo-electric sensors are very common in industrial manufacturing fields such as material handling, packaging, food and beverage, medical, and many others.
There are three ways to select a photo-electric sensor from Banner Engineering:
- by shape or series, for users who are already familiar with Banner Engineering sensors
- by shape and sensing mode, for users who have a clear application in mind and need to choose the best possible sensor
- by sensing distance and sensing mode, for users who have a pre-defined sensing range constraint
1.1.1. Select a photo-electric sensor by shape or series
(back to photo-electric sensors index)▲
As a class-leading manufacturer, Banner Engineering has a very wide selection of sensor shapes, mounting modes and series, each with their own benefits, to fit all applications:
- a. Slot sensors, also known as "U-shaped" sensors, detect objects that pass between the two arms - one with the emitter and the other with the receiver. The fixed slot width provides reliable opposed-mode sensing of objects as small as 0.30mm. Ideal for counting, sensing parts on conveyor rails and belts, detecting edges and other applications.
- b. Rectangular-shaped sensors with mounting thread - mounting style uniquely available with Banner Engineering. All the benefits and technology of rectangular sensors (display, buttons for control and setup, etc.) with the simplicity of an M30 mounting thread
- c. Classic rectangular-shaped sensors for mounting on a plate adapter - allow precise angular positioning, using market widely available mounting plate adapters.
- d. Cylindrical threaded/barrel-shaped sensors - compact sensors with vibration-proof threaded mounting, in all sizes (M12, M18, M30 and more)
- e. Cylindrical smooth-shaped sensors - the most compact high-performance sensors, can be mounted accurated with a simple clamp
1.1.2. Select by shape and sensing mode
(back to photo-electric sensors index)▲
Banner Engineering also offers a wide variety of sensing modes: retro-reflective, through-beam, diffuse, fixed field, adjustable field, convergent, divergent and divergent diffuse.
You can navigate the below table to discover the sensors available for each sensing mode, then click on your selection to open a more detailed configurator:

1.1.3. Select by sensing range
(back to photo-electric sensors index)▲
Banner Engineering offers a wide selection of photo-electric sensors with sensing ranges from a few millimeters to hundred meters.
Navigate the table below to select a sensing mode based on your application requirements:
1.2. Fiber optic photo-electric sensors and amplifiers
(back to sensors index)▲
Fiber optic sensors are small enough to fit in confined areas and can be positioned precisely where needed with flexible fibers.
Their heads are available in various shapes (cylindrical smooth, cylindrical thread, Rectangular and slot/fork shape) and adapt to a variety of sensing modes (diffuse, diffuse reflective, reflective, spot through-beam, linear through-beam)
A fiber optic photo-electric sensing application usually consists of two components:
- A fiber sensor (head and fiber optic, pre-assembled)
- A fiber optic sensor amplifier (which usually emits the lights and processes the returned light. Below, the sensor can be selected by emitted light color or by general technical characteristics

1.3. Photo-electric distance measurement sensors
(back to sensors index)▲
Distance sensors exist in various technologies:
- Photo-electric, with triangulation
- Photo-electric, with time-of-flight technology (it measure the time between emission of a light pulse and its return to the sensor, after being reflected by a target object)
- Photo-electric, with time-of-flight technology (same principle as photo-electric, except the emission is an inaudible high-frequency (100kHz or more) sound pulse
- 1 or 2 digital outputs (triggered when a object arrives at a preset distance of the sensor. 2 digital output distance sensors are used to detect if an object is within a certain distance range from the sensor
- analog output, which transmits in near-real-time the distance to the target object
- combination of digital and analog outputs, to perform both measurement and triggering

1.3.2. Select by sensing range
(back to distance sensors)▲
1.4. Array sensors
(back to sensors index)▲
Array sensors provide a wide area of detection with different resolutions for different sized objects. Some can reliably see objects as small as 5.6mm or extremely flat objects such as an envelope.
They are not to be used for safety applications, in which case safety light curtains are preferred
Below table allows to choose the array sensor based on its sensing dimensions (height or length, depending on installation):
1.5. Edge/profile sensors
(back to sensors index)▲
Using an array of closely spaced light beams, measuring light screens (also known as edge sensors) are designed for profiling, inspections, and process monitoring.
1.6. Displacement sensors
(back to sensors index)▲
Displacement sensors are used to measure distance between an object current position and a pre-set reference.
To select the right displacement sensor for your application, you can either:
- select its beam type and outputs
or - select it to match the sensing range required by your application

1.7. Radar sensors (R-GAGE)
(back to sensors index)▲
Radar sensors use Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar technology to reliably detect moving or stationary targets.
Lower frequency radars can see high dielectric objects very well including cars, trains, trucks, and cargo even in extreme weather conditions.
Higher frequency radar sensors can see a wider array of objects and will be more robust than an ultrasonic sensor in most applications, including outdoors.

1.8. Position sensors
(back to sensors index)▲
Suitable for reliably detecting the presence of a large metal object-such as a car, truck or railcar-even when the vehicle is not moving.
Designed to minimize the effects of temperature swings and destabilizing magnetic fields.
1.9. Ultrasonic sensors
(back to sensors index)▲
Ultrasonic sensors use sound waves rather than light, making them ideal for stable detection of uneven surfaces, liquids, clear objects, and objects in dirty environments.
These sensors work well for applications that require precise measurements between stationary and moving objects.

3.1. Tower / stack lights
(back to lighting and indication index)▲
Preassembled and preconfigured multi-segment LED tower light indicators replace conventional stack lights, which often require time-consuming assembly and complex wiring. Various tower light models result in customized solutions, including a choice of ac or dc supply power, three audible output options, standard or high light intensities and quick-disconnect or pre-wired options.
Pro series programmable multi-color tower lights allow users to configure color, flashing, rotation, and light intensity. Banner's Pro Editor software allows users to program device status, colors and animations for control via 3 discrete outputs.
There are 3 ways to select a tower light from Banner Engineering:
- by the most popular product
- by diameter and series (for monolithic tower light)
- by separates modules or assemblies (for modular tower light)

4.1. Touch-buttons
(back to touch-buttons and push-buttons index)▲
Banner Engineering is the leader in ergonomic, visual and sealed operator touch buttons for industrial applications. Since Banner Engineering touch buttons can have multiple colors and I/O capabilities, they can replace several conventional buttons, making them ideal in lean manufacturing environments.
Capacitive touch buttons have an ergonomic design that does not require force for actuation, but only contact with the surface of the button. This helps prevent stress on hands and wrists. Capacitive touch buttons operate with the touch of a finger, hand, or whole palm, and with either bare or gloved hands.
Optical touch buttons are a photo-electric replacement for mechanical push buttons. Both capacitive and optical touch buttons are zero force activated and require no physical pressure to operate.
